Liverpool and Arsenal will push Man City for the title | Football Digest

Arsenal have made an excellent start to the season as Mikel Arteta's side mount another Premier League title challenge.

Having strengthened significantly in the summer transfer window, Arsenal currently sit just one point behind league leaders Manchester City. They are also top of their Champions League group, having picked up wins over Dutch club PSV Eindhoven and Spanish side Sevilla (twice).

The Gunners are set to return to action after the international break on Saturday when they take on Brentford, having beaten Burnley 3-1 in their last fixture. Here, Mirror Football rounds up all the latest news from in and around the Emirates...

Brazil defy Arteta

Arteta will not be happy with Brazil after striker Gabriel Jesus played the full 90 minutes in their World Cup qualifier against Argentina on Tuesday.

The Gunners boss did not want Jesus to join up with the squad as he had not fully recovered from a hamstring issue. However, Brazil coach Fernando Diniz said Jesus was "feeling good" and described the decision to call him up as an "interesting risk", with the 26-year-old featuring against Argentina.

Jesus last played for Arsenal on October 24 when they beat Sevilla 2-1 in the Champions League, but missed the subsequent games Sheffield United, Newcastle, West Ham, Sevilla and Burnley through injury.

Two players to miss Brentford clash

Arsenal will definitely be without goalkeeper David Raya and midfielder Fabio Vieira when they take on Brentford.

Raya joined Arsenal on loan from Brentford with an option to buy and is ineligible to face his parent club. As a result, Aaron Ramsdale is set to start in goal in what will be his first league appearance since the 3-1 win over Manchester United on September 3.

Vieira, meanwhile, is serving a three match suspension after he was shown a straight red card for a poor challenge against Burnley earlier this month. The 23-year-old will also be absent for Arsenal's upcoming games against Wolves and Luton Town.

Luiz latest

Arsenal have held a longstanding interest in Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz and the Gunners are expected to make a move for the Brazilian in the upcoming January transfer window.

Although Villa want Luiz to stay and he is under contract until 2026, former Villa defender Richard Dunne believes the midfielder will look to move on if he Unai Emery's side fail to qualify for the Champions League. "It's more likely that the big players will be poached away, not the manager," Dunne told Betway.

"Luiz will have Champions League ambitions. He will know soon enough if he can do that at Villa. There are certain clubs that need that position covering, so I expect he will be sought after in the January transfer window - if not, the summer."
